چکیده

Aggregated use along salmon-bearing (Oncorhynchus spp.) streams is common for coastal brown bears Ursus arctos; however, it much less in non-coastal (interior) environments, especially the Arctic. A concurrent study of GPS-collared interior Brooks Range mountains, northern Alaska, revealed that and their by were more prevalent than previously known. Our goal was to estimate number, gender, species (Ursus using anadromous while salmon present an area northern, Alaska. We deployed single-catch breakaway hair snares on heavily-used bear trails 7 km sections two identify individual animals through DNA genotypes. collected 119 samples from August September 2016 2017 which 31 unique five American black americanus across both streams. Using a capture-with-replacement analysis, we estimated 24 (95% CI: 22–27) used one stream 15 9–35) other. Across streams, detected higher proportion females males, bears, greater relatedness among same stream. The high number these belies overall low densities region, patterns suggests obtain behavioral specialization social learning. 354 industrial road permitted be constructed southern flanks Range, bisecting numerous rivers, including sampled above. Given our findings, potential mitigation measures reduce human-bear conflicts related aggregated

Efficacy of Bear Deterrent Spray in Alaska

We present a comprehensive look at a sample of bear spray incidents that occurred in Alaska, USA, from 1985 to 2006. We analyzed 83 bear spray incidents involving brown bears (Ursus arctos; 61 cases, 74%), black bears (Ursus americanus; 20 cases, 24%), and polar bears (Ursus maritimus; 2 cases, 2%). Of the 72 cases where persons sprayed bears to defend themselves, 50 (69%) involved brown bears,...

Gene flow between insular, coastal and interior populations of brown bears in Alaska.

The brown bears of coastal Alaska have been recently regarded as comprising from one to three distinct genetic groups. We sampled brown bears from each of the regions for which hypotheses of genetic uniqueness have been made, including the bears of the Kodiak Archipelago and the bears of Admiralty, Baranof and Chichagof (ABC) Islands in southeast Alaska. These samples were analysed with a suite...

Bacterial and enchytraeid abundance accelerate soil carbon turnover along a lowland vegetation gradient in interior Alaska

Boreal wetlands are characterized by a mosaic of plant communities, including forests, shrublands, grasslands, and fens, which are structured largely by changes in topography and water table position. The soil associatedwith these plant communities contain quantitatively and qualitatively different forms of soil organic matter (SOM) and nutrient availability that drive changes in biogeochemical...

Pronounced climatic variations in Alaska during the last two millennia.

Paired oxygen-isotopic analyses of abiotic carbonate and benthic-ostracode shells from lake sediments provide a continuous quantitative record of growing-season temperature for the past 2000 years in the northwestern foothills of the Alaska Range. This record reveals three time intervals of comparable warmth: anno Domini (A.D.) 0-300, 850-1200, and post-1800, the latter two of which correspond ...

Identifying suitable habitats for brown bear (Ursus arctos) in northern Zagros forests

Wildlife is an important biological indicator of viability of ecosystems, therefore, understanding habitat requirements of species is essential for biodiversity conservation. Determining the suitability of habitats for wildlife is important for effective management and conservation of species. The brown bear (Ursus arctos), as the largest carnivorous mammal in Iran, is distributed in most fores...
